Isopods are detritivores (consumers of dead organic material) and play an important role in most ecosystems. There are over 10,000 identified species of isopods worldwide, with around 4,500 species found in marine environments (mostly on the seabed), 500 species in freshwater, and another 5,000 species on land. In nature, isopods are typically found in leaf litter, under wood and rocks, and in other moist areas. The word isopod is derived from Greek, meaning "equal foot," since they have an equal number of feet on each side of their body. Isopods belong to the subphylum Crustacea (crustaceans), making them more closely related to lobsters and crabs than to insects.
Isopods are positively thigmotactic, meaning they seek contact with surrounding objects to help conserve moisture and prevent desiccation. This behaviour is why isopods are often found grouped tightly together in a social practice called aggregation. When they are on the move, isopods find their way around using turn alternation, meaning they instinctively turn right and left in quick succession to navigate. This movement strategy is thought to reduce the likelihood of circling back and becoming prey when threatened. In healthy environments, isopods exhibit slow movement and may huddle together in groups. However, if they are moving rapidly without being disturbed, there could be something wrong with their environmental conditions. It’s worth keeping an eye on them, as observing and understanding their behaviour can serve as an early indicator of potential issues in your enclosure and/or terrarium.
At Plantastic by Daley, we bring the fascinating world of isopods to your doorstep. Our focus is on these unique crustaceans, which, despite their small size, play a crucial role in their ecosystems. Isopods, including both aquatic species and terrestrial species like woodlice, are remarkable for their biphasic moulting process. During this process, the front half of the body moults first, allowing the exoskeleton to harden before the back half follows. This natural process is crucial for their growth and health.
We offer a diverse range of isopods suited for both scientific study and those looking to add something extraordinary to their terrariums. Observing isopods, especially our professionally bred varieties, provides an educational glimpse into their lesser-known life cycle and behaviours, such as the unique way female isopods brood their young in a specialised pouch called the marsupium beneath their thorax.
Whether you're a researcher, a hobbyist, or someone passionate about biodiversity, Plantastic by Daley not only supplies high-quality isopods but also offers the knowledge and support needed to maintain and appreciate these fascinating creatures. Remember, spotting exoskeletons in your terrarium isn't a cause for alarm—it’s a sign of healthy, moulting isopods thriving under your care. Embrace the wonders of nature with isopods.
