Mealybugs are sap sucking insects that feed on a wide range of plants. They feed by inserting their mouthparts directly into the plant, sucking up nutrients from the sap. 

Mealybugs are difficult to control chemically, The mealy secretion and waxy covering they produce protects them from being wetted by chemical sprays.Their habit of hiding in tight, confined spaces makes it extremely difficult to get the required coverage.

If there are only a few mealybugs on your plants it may be possible to remove them physically by rubbing or washing. It is very time consuming but a cotton bud dipped in alcohol does a great job. Soap sprays and oil sprays can also help control mealybugs without the disruption that can be caused by toxic chemical sprays. Mealybugs are quick to develop resistance to synthetic pesticides. Prevention is key, if you want to protect you plants from pests a plant care routine is essential! When you purchase a new plant give it a good rise, a very good clean with your plantastic potion and make sure you isolate you plant for a couple weeks before adding it to your collection. If there are any pests hiding this will help reduce the risk of them spreading to the rest of your plants. 

Check on your plants regularly, when it’s watering day make sure you check all over your plant for pests before giving them a drink. Personally once a month I like to give my plants a good soak in the shower or take them outside if it’s raining then use my plantastic potion to give them a clean before putting them back inside. If I notice a plant has pests I will remove the plant and isolate it from my other plants and treat the surrounding plants to help prevent the spread. It’s not always possible to keep on top of your plant care routine, hopefully these steps help you prevent/treat mealybugs.
