For plant lovers, by a plant lover
Daley Spence
Plantastic by Daley is a handcrafted store selling trellises, stakes, unique plant décor and everything you need for all your indoorplants. We started making our handmade trellises and stakes for my own love of craft and plants, but when friends kept asking for me to make trellises for them I realised I wasn't the only one who loved quirky bling for my plants. The business has grown from strength to strength (no pun intended !! ) since.
Bioactive terrariums are the perfect addition to any plant lovers collection, if you purchased one of our Bioactive terrariums it will most likely contain springtails and/or isopods. When it comes to Bioactive clean up crews, there’s nothing better then the tag-team duo of isopods and springtails.
There are a few important things to keep in mind when caring for a Bioactive terrarium.
Moisture- The most important thing for any terrarium is to keep them moist and not to over water. Be safe and only mist a small amount of water if the terrarium starts to look dry and monitor of the next few days.
Springtails- The primary purpose of springtails in terrariums is mould control. They’ll eat all kinds of mould, fungus and spores helping to keep any outbreaks under control.
Isopods- Isopods are great recyclers they will eat any decaying material. But plant material alone isn’t enough to sustain them. They also need leaf litter and soft driftwood or cork bark. The nutrients they consume are released back into the substrate via their poop providing fertiliser for your plant and the burrowing nature of isopods also help to aerate the soil.
Light- Isopods don’t need light to survive but your plants sure do, If your terrarium gets to much sun you could cook your plants. So keep your terrarium in bright spot and try avoid any direct sunlight.
Food- You can add food to your terrarium for your little helpers. I find they love potato! Cut a small chunk of any fruit or vegetables and pop it into your terrarium. Below are more options of food that your isos will enjoy. Only add a small amount of food every couple of weeks or even months, depending on the size of your terrarium and the isopod and springtails population.
You don’t want to add food to often or your little helpers won’t do their job of cleaning up your terrarium.
